Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is proud to work with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to pursue science and technology solutions to the world’s most difficult energy problems. We recognize the transformative potential of science to help respond to global challenges, such as climate change and the need for increased energy demand in underserved countries and communities.
We also recognize that we must do more to open the field of science to women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups so that all people can contribute their insight and ideas, helping to ensure equal access to energy technologies. The United Nations General Assembly designated February 11 as International Women and Girls in Science Day “in order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
In honor of this day, women researchers and leaders from EERE and ORNL are answering questions from girls and young women in hopes of inspiring them to pursue careers in the sciences. EERE’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Kelly Speakes-Backman will join Xin Sun, ORNL’s Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Science and Technology, and other researchers from ORNL to respond to student questions and help guide these future scientists to fulfill their own potential in scientific discovery.
