Sana Elyas elected as executive VP of SAMPE North America

The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, or SAMPE, North America has elected ORNL’s Sana Elyas as the incoming executive vice president, effective July 1.

The SAMPE executive cabinet is comprised of a diverse team representing expertise from leading companies, government agencies, research institutions and academia. This team is tasked with enhancing SAMPE’s educational offerings and technical programming while fostering innovation in materials and process engineering. As executive vice president, Elyas will oversee and advise on the activities of several key committees within the region.

Elyas is a scientist in ORNL’s Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies & Composites Innovation group in the Manufacturing Science Division. She is responsible for evaluating and aligning industry partners with core research activities in the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. Her research focuses on advanced thermoplastic composites material and process development.

Elyas brings more than a decade of industry experience in thermoplastic and thermoset composites structural applications across various sectors, including aerospace, transportation, energy, infrastructure, industrial and consumer electronics. She also has experience in engineering design, process development, material testing, program management and new product introduction, gained through roles at multiple start-ups and a large enterprise.

In addition to winning the 2023 ACE Award for the world’s fastest custom cycling shoe, she also received the 2020 SAMPE Young Professional Emerging Leader Award and a scholarship from the composites lab at the National Institute for Aviation Research in 2010.
