Yilu Liu has been inducted into the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Liu is an electricity grid expert in the Power and Energy Systems Group, and is the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor's Chair for Power Electronics. Her work in grid security and modernization led to her induction in the National Academy of Engineering in 2016. In addition to her ORNL research, Liu is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at UT and is deputy director of the Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks, or CURENT, at the university.

The academy recognized Liu for her "spirit of innovation" and for the impact of her work on everyday life. She and the other NAI inductees will be recognized at the academy's annual conference on April 6, 2017, in Boston.

Once the new member class is inducted, NAI said it will have 757 fellows across 229 institutions, accounting for more than 26,000 patents.
