CsYbSe2 is a candidate quantum spin liquid

Scientific Achievement

The magnetic properties of CsYbSe2 crystal indicate its candidacy for a quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state.

Significance and Impact

The finding of QSL behavior in CsYbSe2 could inform applications in quantum communication and computation.

Research Details

  • Extensive low-temperature magnetization, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements were used to find evidence for QSL ground state in the triangular lattice material CsYbSe2.
  • Magnetic field perturbed the QSL ground state and induced long-range order along the ab-plane and c-axis.
  • Strong spin fluctuations were revealed by the broad peak in heat capacity and highly damped INS magnetic excitations.
  • A magnetic plateau of one-third estimated saturation with easy-plane anisotropic magnetism presented a signature of a frustrated triangular lattice.
