Basic Energy Sciences

The DOE Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences (BES) supports core fundamental research programs sponsored by the of Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences (CSGB) and Materials Sciences and Engineering (MSE) and user facilities sponsored by the Scientific User Facilities Divisions (SUFD), including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS). This section describes the Physical Sciences Directorate’s BES-sponsored projects followed by scientific highlights for each program describing scientific and technical advances in the field.

In the Physical Sciences Directorate, the CSGB, MSE, and SUFD research programs fund basic research in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, Chemical Sciences Division, and Materials Science and Technology Division.  To learn more about the BES program in PSD, please follow the links below.
