Oxide interfaces control magnetic twists

Nanometer-scale magnetic skyrmions as small as 10 nm were created in LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattices where interface symmetry is tailored to increase magnetic exchange interactions.

Scientific Achievement: Discovered a chiral spin texture in 3d-5d transition-metal oxide heterostructures that is highly tunable by controlling interface symmetry, yielding topological Hall effects.

Significance and Impact: Work demonstrated control of chiral spin textures enabling nanometer-scale magnetic skyrmions critical to develop ultrahigh-density information storage.
