Larry Baylor, a distinguished staff member in the Fusion and Fission Science and Energy Directorate at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was presented with the 2024 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American Nuclear Society’s Fusion Energy Division at the ANS Technology of Fusion Energy meeting in Madison, Wisconsin. The award recognizes individuals with a continued history of exemplary achievement and leadership in fusion science and engineering.
Baylor serves as the interim Fusion Nuclear Science, Technology, and Engineering section head and leader of the Blanket and Fuel Cycle group in ORNL's Fusion Energy Division. The award was given in “recognition of his lifelong leadership in fusion technology for plasma fueling systems in magnetically confined fusion systems.” Baylor previously received the ANS FED Technical Accomplishment Award in 2014, which recognizes exemplary technical accomplishments in the fusion field. He is only the second researcher in the organization’s history to receive both awards.
Baylor has been a researcher at ORNL since 1989. His work primarily focuses on plasma fueling and transport studies in the field of magnetic fusion energy and the development of fusion technology. He is the author or coauthor of more than 250 papers published in journals and 130 in-conference proceedings. He is an inventor of five patents that have been granted to ORNL and is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit energy.gov/science. — Sean Simoneau
