Polaris 2-D LWR Lattice Physics in SCALE

Project Details

Wide range of LWR geometry support

The Polaris lattice physics code in SCALE combines novel reactor physics methods and software with an easy-to-use interface for LWR assembly analysis.  Hallmark features include the ESSM self-shielding method, a new 2D Exnihilo MOC transport solver, and the state-of-the-art ORIGEN depletion solver.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) uses SCALE lattice physics simulations to generate few-group assembly-averaged cross section data for use with the PARCS nodal diffusion code to perform full-core LWR safety analysis and licensing reviews. In the past, TRITON has been used, which although accurate, has a steep learning curve and can require extensive computational resources. Polaris enables NRC lattice physics analysis without reliance on ORNL expertise and computational resources.  Polaris also enables new opportunities to support the NRC mission such as reactor core uncertainty analysis.
