Social interactions play a foundational role in describing urban agglomeration patterns, but their role in influencing the structure and behavior of urban infrastructure is not well understood. There is little work that quantifies interactions between human social systems and the urban environments we have built. A better empirical understanding of dynamic interactions between the built environment and urban social structure is necessary to support predictions of how cities will respond to climate change, ensure energy and water security for their residents, and to facilitate urban sustainability and resilience.
