CSMB User Program Overview

General user access to the Biological Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument (Bio-SANS) is solicited through proposal calls, which correspond with upcoming High-Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) run cycles. We recommend that prospective user groups contact us in advance of proposal submission to ensure feasibility.

Once submitted, proposals are peer reviewed by an external committee with expertise in research fields related to biological small-angle neutron scattering. Applications to the Bio-Deuteration Laboratory are screened for feasibility in parallel and access is provided to all users with approved neutron beamtime proposals. Deuteration and sample preparation for these experiments can be challenging.

We are committed to working with the user community to coordinate Bio-SANS and Bio-Deuteration Laboratory scheduling such that it enables successful experiments.

Funding for the Center for Structural Molecular Biology  is provided by the Office of Biological & Environmental Research in the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Each facility (Spallation Neutron Source and/or HFIR) should also be acknowledged with this required statement:

[A portion of] This research at ORNL's High Flux Isotope Reactor [and/or Spallation Neutron Source, as appropriate] was sponsored by the Scientific User Facilities Division, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, US Department of Energy.
