Bio
Scott Sluder received a BS in mechanical engineering in 1994 and an MS in mechanical engineering in 1995 from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Scott joined ORNL as a Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center staff member in 1998. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Tennessee. Scott has worked in multiple research areas in his career at ORNL, including emissions controls, low-temperature combustion, EGR cooler fouling, and most recently high-octane fuels for improved engine efficiency. Scott's work with prototype emissions control devices on a Mercedes A170 CDI was instrumental in the EPA decision in 2000 to reduce the sulfur content of diesel fuel. He also made critical contributions to the 2010 and 2011 EPA decisions to allow the use of 15% ethanol blends in some vehicles, and contributed an NMOG estimation algorithm that is the basis for NMOG calculations introduced by EPA in the Tier-3 Emissions Regulations and by California in its LEV-III regulations. Scott's work with the R-factor for calculating fuel economy results from certification tests has also been influential in efforts to shift fuel economy certification to an E10 fuel blend. During the course of his work, Scott has published numerous papers through SAE and other journals and conferences.
Scott has served SAE international for many years in a number of roles, beginning with session organizer and chair. He also served as the Vice-chair of Emissions for the Fuels and Lubricants Activity, and later as a strategic advisor to the Powertrain, Fuels, and Lubricants Activity. Later, Scott joined SAE's Land & Sea Operating Group as a member at large, and subsequently was elected as the group's Chair. He also served as an associate editor of the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants. Scott continued to serve as a member-at-large of the Engineering Meetings Board, and served in 2017-2018 as Engineering Meetings Board Vice-chair. Scott subsequently served on the SAE Fellows Committee and was the Fellow Committee Chair in 2019. Scott has received numerous awards from SAE, including the Forrest R. McFarland Award (twice), the Excellence in Oral Presentation Award (three times), and the Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award. In 2014, Scott was elected as an SAE Fellow.
