Dr. Joshua New is a computer scientist joining Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 2009, M&O with DOE's Building Technologies Office (BTO) in 2021, and holds a Joint Faculty Position with The University of Tennessee since 2012. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Tennessee in 2009, his M.S. in Computer Systems and Software Design and his B.S. with a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics with a Physics minor from Jacksonville State University.
Dr. New is a member of the Grid-Interactive Controls group, Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC), and ORNL’s Climate Change Science Institute (CCSI). He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has led more than 45 competitively-awarded projects in the past 5 years involving websites, web services, databases, simulation development, visual analytics, supercomputing using the world’s #1 fastest supercomputer and artificial intelligence for big data mining. He is a Senior IEEE member, Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute (PMI), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), certified Investor Ready Energy Efficiency (IREE) representative, and voting member and officer within several Technical and Standards Committees of ASHRAE.
Dr. New has worked most recently to prioritize utility use cases and create OpenStudio and EnergyPlus models of over 178,000 buildings - using non-traditional data sources and algorithms - to provide a simulation-based quantification of energy, demand, emissions, and cost savings for each building validated against 15-minute whole-building electrical use (bit.ly/virtual_epb). His team has focused on nation-scale building energy modeling data sources and algorithms to accomplish their 5-year vision to create, simulate, and analyze a model of every U.S. building - 122.9 million building models available at bit.ly/ModelAmerica.
