The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory welcomed a high-level delegation from the Energy Market Authority of Singapore, alongside representatives from Singapore’s National Environment Agency, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and the Singapore Embassy from June 19 to 20, 2025.

Singapore is currently studying the potential deployment of nuclear energy domestically, with a focus on small modular reactors, and advanced nuclear reactor technologies. Their visit to ORNL sought to establish further collaboration with U.S. national labs and other partners to help build up their nuclear energy capabilities. The two-day visit provided an opportunity for the Singaporean delegation to exchange insights with ORNL’s nuclear experts on nuclear energy development in addition to exploring collaborative opportunities and showcasing ORNL’s technical capabilities.

Day one of the visit began with an ORNL overview and discussions on nuclear energy, Singapore’s nuclear planning, and modeling and simulation. The delegation toured the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility and participated in discussions on siting assessments and advanced nuclear fuels. The group also visited ORNL’s molten salt facilities and Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, followed by conversations on capacity building and workforce development.

The delegation started their second day with a visit to the TVA Clinch River Nuclear Site, where TVA representatives provided context on the status of the Clinch River project and discussed various topics in advanced reactor development, including resource strategy, licensing, siting, stakeholder engagement, and operating models. The visit concluded with an industry roundtable hosted by the East Tennessee Economic Council.

The delegation’s host and ORNL Nuclear Energy Program Director Andrew Worrall, deemed the visit a success.

"This exchange highlights the value of international collaboration in advancing nuclear technologies,” Worrall said. “We were proud to share ORNL’s expertise and learn more about Singapore’s thoughtful approach to future energy planning."

This event was organized through the support of DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy.
