QIS profile: Gilles Buchs

Gilles Buchs has spent his career working in the fields of nanoscience, photonics systems and quantum technologies in academia and industry. In his new role at ORNL, Gilles will contribute to establishing and leveraging a quantum edge node based on a trapped ion quantum resource to conduct research in quantum simulation and computation.

Substantial institutional investments in equipment and facilities, as well as  recent increases in federal funding from the Department of Energy and other agencies, have positioned Gilles and his colleagues for rapid growth and success.

Gilles joined ORNL in 2022 and was previously a senior researcher for the startup Silicon Quantum Computing in Sydney. He earned his master’s degree in experimental physics in 2004 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and his Ph.D. in the same field in 2008 from the University of Basel in Switzerland. His research interests are articulated around quantum simulation and quantum sensing.

In his spare time, Gilles enjoys volunteering, ice hockey, reading about history, and spending time with his family.

ORNL’s quantum research is supported by DOE’s Office of Science. For  more information on ORNL’s quantum research portfolio, visit https://www.qscience.org/.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for DOE’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. DOE’s Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit https://energy.gov/science.
