Sustainable Composites of Lignin-based Recycled Plastics

Technology Summary

This work summarizes utilization of a recycled plastic and lignin to make higher value products for commodity usage. Processing issues associated with combination of plastic and lignin with the degradation of latter was addressed by tuning melting behavior of the recycled polymer. Enhanced processability of the polymer was demonstrated by spinning continuous filaments of the sustainable materials. Undrawn as-spun filaments of diameter 11-19 micrometers made from these materials exhibit 300 MPa tensile strength, 22 GPa tensile modulus and 2–6 % elongation.
