Zhenglai is an R&D Associate Staff. He received a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. His research focuses on enhancing building energy efficiency, optimizing demand flexibility, strengthening thermal resilience, detecting and quantifying air infiltration, and energy policy toward Low-to-Median Income families.

The overarching goal of Zhenglai's research is to pioneer cost-effective technologies and building envelope solutions that push the boundaries of both scientific knowledge and technological advancement. He achieves these objectives by leveraging advanced building envelope design, cutting-edge energy thermal storage systems, innovative building-to-grid integration strategies, and state-of-the-art infrared thermal imaging technology. His research draws upon various experimental facilities, such as the Rotatable Guarded Hot Box, the Heat Flow Meter Apparatus, the Thermal Energy Storage Test Bed, and the Differential Scanning Calorimetry. These facilities are complemented by various analytical tools and techniques, including numerical simulations, artificial intelligence, spatial-time analysis, and imaging analysis.

Zhenglai is an Associate Member of ASHRAE.
