Laser Diagnostics and Measurements

ORNL Image

Researchers in the THIE group use state-of-the-art laser diagnostics and measurement techniques for Validation and Verification (V&V) of CFD codes.

Problem Statement

Modeling of transport species (momentum, mass, energy) for several engineering problems requires undisturbed local information of the variables of interest. Conventional measurement techniques are usually intrusive and provide single-point readings.

Technical Approach

Laser based diagnostics provide non-intrusive measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution. PIV and PLIF may provide simultaneous non-intrusive full-filed velocity and temperature measurements.

Benefit

Validation and Verification of CFD codes can be performed by comparing full field measurements.

Mechanistic models can be improved based on measured quantities.

Visualization of the phenomena provide insight about the problem at hand.

Application to multi-phase flows (optical access required)
