Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed a neutral-ligand–based solvent extraction process for efficient rare earth element (REE) separation. This scalable method enhances selectivity while reducing processing steps, capital costs, and waste generation compared with conventional acid-based systems. The technology enables the recovery of critical REEs vital for electronics and defense applications, helping strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on foreign refining.
Description
The NEAREST process replaces traditional acid-base extraction systems with a neutral ligand-based approach that uses recyclable organic and aqueous phases. This plug-in separation method allows for the grouping and selective recovery of REEs under milder conditions, improving phase stability and minimizing byproduct formation. By refining ligand chemistry and extraction media, NEAREST achieves higher throughput and improved selectivity for adjacent REEs—effectively halving the number of required separation stages relative to existing technologies. The process is compatible with current industrial solvent extraction infrastructure, allowing for simplified integration into existing refining operations. Its modular design accommodates various feedstocks, including those derived from monazite and other domestic sources. Overall, NEAREST offers a practical pathway to lower-cost REE refining and recovery.
