This technology uses an AI/ML-based framework to improve industrial fiber sizing processes for composite manufacturing. Fiber sizing can be affected by inconsistent wetting, fiber twisting, and nonuniform coating deposition, resulting in variable composite quality and costly trial-and-error process development. By combining real-time sensing, imaging, and predictive modeling, the framework supports more consistent coating application and fiber handling while reducing the experimental data and process adjustments needed to achieve desired manufacturing outcomes.

Description

Fiber sizing applies a thin polymeric coating to fiber surfaces to support adhesion between fibers and matrix materials in composites. At industrial scale, variations in fiber behavior and coating deposition can make it difficult to achieve consistent results across materials and operating conditions.

ORNL’s technology integrates imaging and sensing capabilities with an AI/ML-based predictive framework for monitoring and optimizing an industrial fiber sizing line. The system collects real-time information related to fiber processing and coating performance. These measurements are evaluated using predictive models informed by experimental observations and the underlying science of sizing behavior.

The framework can recommend or direct process adjustments to help achieve targeted coating characteristics while improving fiber spreadability. Specialized analytical approaches may also be used to assess coating deposition during processing. The technology is intended for use with multiple fiber types and sizing systems and may support automated, closed-loop process control. By reducing dependence on trial-and-error testing, the approach could accelerate process development and improve the consistency and performance of manufactured composites.
