Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group Leader

Stephen Kowalski is the Group Leader for the Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is also the ORNL relationship manager for the Appliance and Equipment Standards subprogram. He leads a team of sixteen research and technical staff members in research and development of technologies applied to residential and commercial HVAC, water heating, and refrigeration equipment and appliances. In addition, he has over 25 years’ experience in product development with a major HVAC OEM. 
 

Kowalski has experience in testing residential and commercial heat pumps to the various DOE efficiency standards using ORNL’s environmental test chambers. He has specified three new environmental test chambers purchased by ORNL, was part of a team that applied direct air capture of CO2 technology to a packaged rooftop air conditioning unit, and studies high temperature heat pumps for various applications. 
 

He has authored nine ORNL reports and has been a co-author on ten journal publications. He holds four patents in the field of residential and commercial HVAC products and controls. He is a member of ASHRAE and participates on technical committees and standard project committees. 
 

Kowalski received his MSE in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University, his MBA from Indiana University, and his BS in mechanical engineering from Drexel University.
