Rebecca Kurfess is a research staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Manufacturing Demonstration Facility where her work focuses on hybrid (additive and subtractive) manufacturing systems. She received her S.B and S.M degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2017 and 2019, respectively. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at MIT while also working at ORNL. Her research focuses on large-scale additive manufacturing systems that are both polymer extrusion and metal based systems. Her Ph.D. research targets hybrid manufacturing. Besides having several years of research experience at ORNL, she has industrial experience in automotive production at BMW Manufacturing in South Carolina. She has also worked in the bearing industry in both research and development capacities as well as production operations in Germany. She is a member of SME, ASME and SWE.
