Bio
Randall J. Belles is a senior staff engineer with the Advanced Reactor Systems and Safety Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Randy received a B.S. in systems engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1979 and an M.S. in industrial engineering with an emphasis in engineering management from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1998. Randy spent 8 years on active military duty in the submarine service where he met all the requirements and passed extensive examinations at Naval Reactors to be posted as the engineer officer for a submarine nuclear power plant. Subsequently, Randy was employed by Florida Power and Light and held an active senior reactor operator license to operate the Turkey Point nuclear power plant. He joined ORNL as an R&D Staff Member in 1993. Belles’ research interests span a wide range of issues including commercial nuclear power plant operations; used nuclear fuel storage, transportation, and disposal; NRC licensing support work; nuclear non-proliferation work; probabilistic risk assessment; and power plant siting work.
