Michael C Shannon

Bio

Michael Shannon began his carrier at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 2011 and holds a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee, United States.  At ORNL, Michael worked on projects related to border monitoring applications, physical protection of fuel cycle facilities, nuclear security culture and insider threat, and transport security.  He was a Technical Officer for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) Division of Nuclear Security from 2015 to 2018 where he both supported and led all matters related to the security of nuclear and radioactive material during transport. This included working directly with IAEA Member States to enhance their nuclear security regimes, leading development of international publications and Nuclear Security Series recommendations and guidance, and implementing transport security training courses and workshops.  Having returned to ORNL in 2018 as a Security Engineer, Michael managed the Laboratory’s data science and analytics efforts supporting the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence, managed the Laboratory’s Africa portfolio supporting transportation security for the Department of Energy’s Office of Radiological Security (ORS), and led the Laboratory’s Transport Security Functional Team’s Transport Analysis and Solutions sub-team efforts supporting the Department of Energy’s Office of International Security (INS).  He now overseas the Transportation Security Engineer & Analysis group and is the Deputy Lab POC for the Office of Radiological Security.
