R&D Assistant Staff Member

Leah Jacobs is a R&D Assistant Staff Member in the Intelligent Machine Tool group at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility as a part of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Jacobs specializes in research regarding structured light scanning for use in a manufacturing environment.

Jacobs has focused her research on the applications structured light scanning and its repeatability and reproducibility. Structured light scanning uses 7dual cameras and a projector at known angles from each other to take images of the distortion of the projected pattern on the object which are stitched together to form a digital representation of the object. This digital representation can then be used to detect defects and preform measurements.

Jacobs is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers and Tau Beta Pi. She has published multiple articles about using structured light scanning for manufacturing purposes.

Jacobs received her MS in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee Knoxville; and her BS in mechanical engineering from Lipscomb University.
