JungHyun Bae joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2022 as a Eugene P. Wigner Distinguished Staff Fellow (DSF). He is working in the Used Fuel and Nuclear Material Disposition group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate. His current research projects include developing an advanced muon tomography system to monitor spent nuclear fuel (SNF) casks and muon detector in the Underground Research Laboratory to monitor long-term nuclear wastes. He is also participating in a SNF rod fatigue testing data analysis using Cyclic Integrated Reversible Bending Fatigue Testing (CIRFT) and SNF vacuum drying projects. JungHyun will focus his fellowship research on designing and building a prototype of the Cherenkov muon spectrometer and momentum integrated muon tomography system to advance utility of cosmic ray muons in many engineering applications. This approach will show highly efficient, safe, and high-resolution reconstructed images of spent nuclear fuel casks. His ongoing research interests include developing an advanced muon detectors as well as other radiation detectors, nuclear security, used fuel investigation, and nuclear material/waste management. JungHyun is actively involved in American Nuclear Society (ANS) as a conference session chair and reviewers. He is also assigned as a volunteering reviewer for various peer-review journals. JungHyun Bae received his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from Purdue University, master’s degree in nuclear engineering from University of California, Berkeley, and bachelor’s degree in nuclear and quantum engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Engineering (KAIST).
