Dr. Grant Helmreich is a Research and Development Staff Member in the Particle Fuel Forms Group in the Nuclear Fuel Development Section at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Dr. Helmreich joined ORNL in April 2015 after receiving Ph.D. from the Texas A&M University in Materials Science and Engineering, with previous degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Chemistry. Dr. Helmreich's primary research interests are focused on advancing characterization methods for both as-fabricated and irradiated particle fuels (e.g. TRISO) by application of modern computational methods and advanced imaging approaches. Dr. Helmreich has worked in this space as a researcher and project manager within the Advanced Gas Reactor Fuel Development and Qualification Program and in collaborations with several industry partners. In these roles, Dr. Helmreich has developed substantial expertise in x-ray computed tomography, processing of 3D image sets for extraction of quantitative data, statistical treatment of large-scale characterization data, and qualification of particle-based fuels.
