E Andrew Payzant

Distinguished R&D Staff Member and Group Leader, Materials Engineering

Andrew Payzant is a Distinguished R&D Staff member, and Materials Engineering Group Leader, in the Neutron Scattering Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and is an instrument scientist on the HIDRA engineering beamline at HFIR. He earned degrees in physics and engineering from Dalhousie University and a PhD in engineering science from the University of Western Ontario. Prior to joining the Neutron Sciences Directorate he was affiliated with ORNL’s High Temperature Materials Laboratory (HTML) and Center for Nanophase Materials Science (CNMS). His research at ORNL has mainly focused on the development and application of neutron and x-ray in-situ diffraction methods for characterization of structure, texture, and residual stress in materials. He has coauthored over 200 scientific papers and 3 patents, is a Fellow of the JCPDS - International Center for Diffraction Data, is Chair of the ICDD Board of Directors, and was recently elected to the 2021 Class of Fellows of ASM International.
