Cybersecurity: "State of the art cybersecurity is required to keep things working smoothly"

Isaac Sikkema, cybersecurity software engineer, develops software to ensure the security of other systems and platforms. For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we asked Isaac about his cybersecurity career. Check out his responses below.

What led you to pursue a career in cybersecurity? A cybersecurity job at ORNL?

I was introduced to the field of cybersecurity at ORNL when I interned here my sophomore year of undergrad.

I started working full time with ORNL because I liked the people and projects I worked with.

Why is cybersecurity research important to national security?

Many things this nation depends on are facilitated using computers. State of the art cybersecurity is required to keeps these things working smoothly.

In two sentences, what do you do as a cybersecurity professional?

I develop secure software, or I develop software to ensure the security of other systems and platforms.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about pursuing a career in cybersecurity?

Focus on what you like doing with computers. Cybersecurity is applicable to everything, so if you can do it well, you can do it to make things more secure.
