Scott Smith
Scott Smith, section head for Precision Manufacturing and Manufacturing Innovation in the Manufacturing Science Division, has received the Dedicated Service Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The award is given in recognition of his exceptional performance, exemplary leadership and extensive devoted service.
With more than 40 years of experience in manufacturing, his research primarily focuses on machine tool research and development. He is a pioneer in machine tools, machine dynamics and process planning, contributing significantly to the field through his innovations. His portfolio includes more than 200 technical papers, two books and numerous patents, underscoring his impact on the field.
His research focuses on enhancing the efficiency and capabilities of manufacturing systems, particularly in the automotive and aerospace sectors. His groundbreaking contributions have not gone unnoticed; he previously received the William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award from the American Society of Engineers for creating thin monolithic machined structures that are used today in the commercial airline industry. He also received the ASME Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Medal for significantly improving the productivity and efficiency of manufacturing operations.
In addition to these achievements, he is an ORNL Corporate Fellow and serves on the ASME Board of Governors. Scott is also among the few to be elected as a U.S. Fellow to the International Academy for Production Engineering.
