Miller reappointed to National Research Council committee

John C. Miller, senior research staff member and head of the Biochemistry and Biophysics Section of the Life Sciences Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been recently reappointed to a three-year term on the National Research Council's (NRC) Committee on Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences. The committee is a standing NRC Committee funded by the DOE, Basic Energy Sciences and the National Science Foundation.

Miller, recipient of an R&D 100 Award, is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and the Optical Society of America and is a member of the American Chemical Society. Most recently, Miller was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for his contributions to multiphoton ionization spectroscopy and nonlinear optics, which are used in the analysis and characterization of materials.

Miller earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1971 from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a doctorate in physical chemistry in 1975 from the University of Colorado.

He and his wife, Gray, live in Oak Ridge and have a son, Marshall.

ORNL, a multiprogram national research and development facility, is managed for the Department of Energy by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation. The National Research Council is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.
