Applied Research for Mobility Systems

Bridging the gap between real vehicles and simulated environments

The Vehicle Systems Research Group conducts virtual and advanced hardware-in-the-loop research to accelerate the development of transportation technologies from component-level to full traffic network including electrification and connected and automated vehicles. Vehicle Systems Research unites state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities with world class hardware-in-the-loop facilities to explore key research questions in the transportation sector to optimize the nexus of mobility, energy, and productivity for the nation.

Researchers in the group leverage key ORNL expertise in advanced engine technologies, advanced power electronics and electric machines, and laboratory-to-roadside testing, evaluation, modeling, and analysis to meet the research needs of the DOE Vehicle Technologies Office and to accelerate public adoption of energy efficient transportation technologies.
