Application Engineering Group
Delivering advanced scientific applications with best-in-class methods, design, and implementation.
The Application Engineering group undertakes cutting edge research and development in areas as diverse as neutron scattering data analysis, modeling plasma for fusion energy, electrical grid resilience, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. We believe that software is essential for enabling scientific research and aim to create a culture of software excellence that will ensure that ORNL’s world-class science outcomes will be backed by robust, high quality, repeatable, and sustainable software artifacts that guarantee the integrity of the scientific results. Our group members catalyze lab-wide engagements from the proposal to the project conclusion stage and beyond, serve as Principal Investigators (PIs) and co-PIs on core and cross-cutting research initiatives, and provide scoping with Program Managers and PIs on how a scientific software capability can advance programs and projects within the lab and the broader scientific software community. We strive to be collaborators on projects in as wide a variety of domains as possible.
