DOE is responsible for the use of Special Nuclear Materials for space power applications and the design, fabrication, testing, and fueling of nuclear power systems.

The Advanced Reactor Systems and Safety Group provides technical and management support to a variety of projects under the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) and in cooperation with NASA including the production of a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator for the upcoming Mars 2020 Mission and Nuclear Thermal Propulsion system development.
