Separation of rare earth containing ores is often approached via froth floatation; however, for successful flotation, ligands must be designed that can both bind to the mineral interface while being amphiphilic enough to drag the minerals to an air-aqueous interface. We describe a means here to spectroscopically probe the flotation of ore particles to an air-aqueous interface using interfacial spectroscopies. The approach here allows for screening of ligands and minerals for floatation, allowing for the design of new collector molecules to target critical materials.
