  • Materials

We exploit surface deposition of a renewable additive on the carbon fiber surface to enhance interfacial properties of fiber-reinforced composites. The apparatus and processing method involving specific chemical moieties delivering uniform surface feature on carbon fibers are disclosed. Process parameters such as energy input, environment condition, and processing time were adjusted to control the surface tailoring of fibers. The surface modified carbon fibers when used in epoxy matrix delivered 20-30% increase in interlaminar shear strength of the reinforced composites. This improvement in properties will help improve fiber matrix load translation and improved performance life
