CO2 Capture and Low-Temperature Release with a Recyclable Ligand

INVENTION REFERENCE NUMBER

  • Chemicals

We have developed a ligand that removes CO2 from ambient air by carbonate crystallization from an aqueous solution, allowing for simple CO2 separation by filtration of the carbonate salt. The ligand can be quantitatively recovered by heating the solid carbonate to 120 o C, which releases the CO2 and allows the ligand to be recycled. This ligand is also adaptable to current CO2 capture technology, as it can be mixed as a slurry in bicarbonate solutions formed by reaction of sodium hydroxide with CO2 from air, to generate an insoluble carbonate salt. Thus, this compound offers a simple and economical approach to CO2 capture from air or flue gas.
