The concept presented in the technical description is summarized here. Our proposed device relies heavily on our ability to fabricate multilayer, porous thin film devices that maintain its structural integrity even after extensive thermal cycling under inherently reactive environment. We propose a multilayered porous device that creates a sandwich of anode, separator, and cathode between two current collectors. Such a device, when impregnated with liquid electrolyte can function as a highly durable Li-ion battery. This invention proposes a approach to inorganic separators for Li-ion batteries that meet or exceeds the performance of currently used polymer based separator. Unlike the polymer based separator that are susceptible to shrinkage and/or melting under large temperature window, the proposed inorganic separator can survive robust thermal swings and provide better interfacial behavior in the assembled device that consists of a liquid electrolyte and positive and negative electrode layers. Furthermore, all inorganic porous separator layer can provide superior thermal resistance under severe battery conditions like overcharge etc. that can lead to exothermic reactions compromising on the safety aspects of the Li-ion cells.
