Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists’ (WDTS) Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) is a Department of Energy Office of Science program that places undergraduate students and recent graduates in full-time research appointments at DOE national laboratories.

SULI appointments at ORNL are paid, 10-week summer and 16-week spring and fall opportunities. These are designed to support students exploring research careers aligned with the DOE mission.

Brook McJunkin works in the Creep Lab at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, preparing test specimens with precision tools, operating high-temperature creep testing equipment, monitoring instrumentation, and reviewing test data at a computer workstation.

At ORNL, a SULI internship is a front-row seat to some of the most ambitious science in the world. Interns don’t watch from the sidelines — they join a research team and work shoulder-to-shoulder with staff scientists and engineers, guided one-on-one by a mentor invested in their growth. Depending on their interests, students might advance artificial intelligence on the world’s fastest supercomputers, probe materials with the most intense pulsed neutron beams on Earth, or help shape the next generation of clean energy and nuclear systems.

Interns also become part of a vibrant community of peers, sharpen their skills through professional development, and present their findings to mentors and fellow researchers. For many, a summer or semester at ORNL is where a curiosity about research becomes a calling.
