Shane A. Scoggins

Group Leader Reactor Core Components and Rod Drive Systems

As the Group Leader of Reactor Core Components and Rod Drives System Engineering for the Research Reactors Division in the Neutron Sciences Directorate at ORNL, Mr. Scoggins is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). This 85MW reactor is the highest flux reactor-based source of neutrons for research in the United States, and it provides one of the highest steady-state neutron fluxes of any research reactor in the world, enabling world-class capabilities for neutron scattering, isotope production, materials irradiation, neutron activation analysis, and nuclear physics.

Mr. Scoggins came to ORNL in 2009 to join the HFIR Systems Engineering Group as a Mechanical Engineer responsible for the Control Rod Drive System. He has since added responsibility for other reactor systems including Reactor Core Components along with other various related systems. He supports the design, fabrication, and maintenance activities for many reactor components. He is also the group lead engineer for the beryllium reflector and core component upgrades that are on-going to be installed in the planned 2029 HFIR beryllium reflector replacement.

Mr. Scoggins holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
