Joseph (Joe) Pickel is a Sr. Mission Support Specialist for the Safety and Operations Services Division at ORNL. He has previously served as Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality Coordinator for the Fusion and Fission Energy Science Directorate, as well as roles as Group Leader, interim Directorate Operations Manager, Project Manager and Management System Owner for R&D Work Control at the laboratory. He is a graduate of the ORNL’s Management Boot Camp and Developing Leadership Potential programs as well as the Center for Creative Leadership’s Looking Glass: Leading for Organizational Impact program.
Joe is professionally active in the American Chemical Society where he has been recognized as a Fellow of this society and has served as the Chair of the society’s Division of Chemical Health and Safety, co-theme leader for the 2021 Fall National Meeting, and co-organizer of the inaugural ACS Presidential Safety Summit. He has been appointed to the ACS’ Committee on Chemical Safety where he serves as a subcommittee chair and was selected by his peers to lead the ACS Safety Network which represents all safety focused efforts in the society. He is a Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer and serves as president of the board of the National Registry of Certified Chemists.
He is an engaged citizen of Oak Ridge, TN and active in many community activities including as a registered volunteer and leader in local scouting organizations (Cub Scout Pack 830, Scoutmaster of Troop 42, Girl Scouts), American Youth Soccer Organization, and international student programs (Naka Shi Exchange, Children’s International Summer Villages).
