Diego A. Hincapie Ossa

Economics and Employment Modeler (Circular Bioeconomy Systems Fellow)

Diego Hincapié Ossa (Hincapie-Ossa) is a researcher with the Transportation Analytics and Decision Science group at ORNL. His research focuses on developing and applying analytical models to support decisions and policy to implement and transform industrial systems, considering interactions with people and the environment. Diego received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Ohio State University in 2025. In his Ph.D. he analyzed environmental, social, and economic impacts of regional-scale policies and industrial transitions, using and combining engineering-based analytical techniques with social and policy analyses. He holds a Masters in Energy Systems from the University of Melbourne and a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia). Diego complements his academic and research profile with about ten years of experience contributing to project planning, promotion, and evaluation in the power generation and transportation infrastructure industries and in environmental and energy policy analysis.

As a UT-ORII fellow in the Circular Bioeconomy Systems convergent innovation initiative at Oak Ridge, Diego analyzes societal impacts of emerging bio-based economic activities. In his project, Diego aims at connecting stakeholder-engaged decision analysis with system-oriented modelling to study emerging industries and novel business models. Diego’s interests include using and combining classical assessment methodologies (e.g., Life-Cycle Assessments, Techonoeconomic Assessments) with social and economic analysis (I-O, CGE) and data-driven tools (optimization, Agent Based Modeling) to support decisions towards designing and deploying more efficient, sustainable, and resilient industrial systems.
