Bio
Whitney started as a Technical Professional II at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility under the Material Science Division at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) in July 2024. Her work within the lab primarily focuses on processing various materials for analysis, performing optical analyses, and conducting mechanical testing, all of which contribute to furthering her group's research relating to material composition, properties, and potential uses associated with 3D printed metals.
Prior to joining ORNL, Whitney received her B.Sc in Biology with a concentration in microbiology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2020. After a summer internship at Assured Bio, LLC. in which she was the lead molecular analyst for environmental CoVID testing, Whitney went on to work in environmental remediation with Geosyntec Consltants-SiREM Laboratory in 2020. Her projects under SiREM included a vast array of topics, including among others: nutrient cycling in lake water-sediment systems, remediation of toxic waste stream in groundwater and soil systems, and molecular analysis of bacteria and viruses for city and state level monitoring programs, as well as efficacy testing of patent pending viricidal products. This cross-divisional expertise within SiREM allowed Whitney to hone many skills in microscopic analysis, chemistry, engineering, data analysis, lab management, and critical thinking that proved valuable in her transition into the field of material science at ORNL.
