Dr. Steven C. Hespeler is an experienced mathematical programmer, currently focused on utilizing sensory data from physical components to enable smart systems, structures and manufacturing processes at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). With a doctoral degree in Industrial Engineering and a minor in Applied Statistics, Dr. Hespeler is at the forefront of data science and Machine Learning (ML), reshaping the landscape of research and technology.

 

Dr. Hespeler's journey through academia and national laboratories has been marked by high-level research projects that leverage sensory data to redefine the possibilities of technology. Collaborating with institutions such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Kansas City National Security Campus, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, he has harnessed diverse sensory data sources, including ultrasound, thermal, acoustic emission, and Additive Manufacturing (AM) parameters/features. At the heart of Dr. Hespeler's expertise lies his mastery of ML algorithms. He excels in creating advanced ML models designed for signal processing and Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) for enabling in-vehicle process monitoring/control, in-situ quality control of AM parts, and robotic inspection/structural health monitoring. His work in predictive analytics spans a wide spectrum, from real-time quality control of AM processes to monitoring the structural health of critical components. Most recently, Dr. Hespeler is pursuing new techniques for pushing the boundaries of anomaly detection in Controller Area Network (CAN) data, amplifying in-vehicle cybersecurity to unprecedented levels of protection.

 

A postdoctoral researcher and published author, Dr. Hespeler's work has graced the pages of scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences. His doctoral dissertation, "Online State of Charge Prediction in Next Generation Hybrid Vehicle Batteries Using Deep Recurrent Neural Networks and Continuous Model Size Control," is a testament to his intellectual merit and innovation. Collaborative by nature, he thrives in interdisciplinary research settings and continuously seeks opportunities to bridge knowledge gaps. With a fervent passion for emerging multidisciplinary research areas, Dr. Hespeler is committed to advancing the field of data analytics.
