Stefan R Schnake

Research Scientist -- Computational and Applied Mathematics

At ORNL, Stefan is interested in discrete model reduction techniques to high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) arising from kinetic problems.  Specially, he is focused on sparse-grids, where he works on ASGarD -- a sparse-grid discontinuous Galerkin code https://github.com/project-asgard/asgard, and low-rank methods using dynamical low-rank approximation.

Stefan was a postdoctoral associate at ORNL from August 2020- May 2023 following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Oklahoma under the direction of Dr. Ying Wang.  At OU, he focused on numerical methods for non-divergence form elliptic partial differential equations.

Stefan earned a Ph.D. in 2017 at the University of Tennessee with Dr. Xiaobing Feng as his advisor.   While a graduate student, he developed a full MATLAB toolbox for a discontinuous Galerkin finite element numerical derivative.  Before his Ph.D., Stefan received a B.S. in Applied Mathematics with an emphasis in Computer Science from Murray State University in 2012.
