Bio
Renan Souza is a Research and Development Staff Research Scientist in the Data Lifecycle and Scalable Workflows group at Oak Ridge National Lab.
Renan holds a Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc (2009–2019) in Computer Science from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Prior to joining the ORNL, Renan was a Research Scientist at IBM Research (2015–2022) in the Knowledge-centric Systems group. He has been working both as a software engineer and a researcher for over ten years. During his time at IBM, his work was critical to help multiple computational scientists and engineers worldwide, having collaborated with teams in various IBM labs across the globe. He has expertise in dealing with users, having worked closely with industry clients in domains such as geosciences and material discovery.
During his B.Sc., he spent a year in the Computer Science department at Missouri State University and was an intern at Stanford University in the SLAC National Laboratory. During his Ph.D., he was a visiting researcher at Inria, France. He received the best M.Sc. thesis and an honored mention for the best Ph.D. thesis awards from SBBD, the main conference on large-scale data management in Latin America.
He is passionate about designing, implementing, and deploying systems for HPC workflows, large-scale data management, provenance, semantic web and knowledge graphs, and machine learning. He likes using such technology to integrate heterogeneous data, systems, and teams in an efficient and scalable way, aiming to support the scientific discovery lifecycle.
