Hannah R Collier

Earth Science Informatics Technical Professional

Hannah Collier is the metadata team lead for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) climate research facility’s data center (ADC). Her role involves managing a team of information specialists as they create and audit metadata for atmospheric science data products.

Hannah aims to simplify the user experience for researchers wishing to find, understand, and reuse climate science data from the ARM data repository. She also strives to automate routine tasks to improve metadata management efficiency and consistency. In particular, she is investigating how ML/AI techniques can be used to enhance metadata workflows.

As the ADC continues to grow, Hannah focuses on how the ARM data repository fits within a larger research data sharing community, always considering how to improve interoperability and usability. Through attending and presenting scientific findings at conferences and meetings, she aims to learn, build a network, and disseminate best practices in science informatics.

Before joining ORNL, Hannah worked as an environmental technician with various consulting agencies in the Knoxville area. During this time she gained experience in soil and groundwater sampling, technical writing, and field team management.

During her master's degree program at the University of Tennessee, Hannah participated in an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant for research focusing on preparing an educational pathway for information liaisons to scientists - the Collaborative Analysis Liaison Librarians (CALL) Grant. Her research and studies focused on the importance of well-curated metadata, user-experience, and the FAIR data principles.
