David H Vandergriff

David is a Senior Project Engineer with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with more than 45 years of design engineering and management experience. For most of his career, David has worked on large, complex international scientific/technical projects including the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project, The Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) project, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) project, and currently the ITER project.  His engineering experience includes the design, fabrication, and installation of various mechanical systems including rotating equipment, shielding, lifting, in-plant equipment, vacuum, magnets, conventional and exotic materials, all types of fabrication, computer-aided design, and analysis.  

 

Before retiring from ORNL in 2015, David had been in various engineering and management roles including managing a staff of up to 30 individuals consisting of engineers, scientists, technicians, and other managers and professionals at the Spallation Neutron Source. After retiring from ORNL, David worked as a system design manager on the Y-12 UPF project, before returning to ORNL to work on the US ITER program.

 

David possesses a diverse skill set resulting from years of engineering and management experience. He has a unique ability to understand the entire scope of a project from the “big picture” down to the smallest details. David holds one US patent.
