Dr. Wang is a Distinguished R&D Staff member in the Environmental and Biological Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and a Joint Faculty Professor of data and computer science at the University of Tennessee–Knoxville (UTK). Dr. Wang leads multidisciplinary cutting-edge research in Exascale Earth Systems Modeling (land), science-inspired AI/machine learning, high-performance computing, advanced manufacturing, and developmental biology. Dr. Wang has made significant contributions to several national-scale projects, such as climate change modeling (DOE), the Exascale Computing Project (DOE), TeraGrid (NSF), and embryogenesis (NIH).

Dr. Wang is the author of over 130 peer-reviewed publications and a creator of over 20 software and data products, He serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI for over 30 projects funded by various agencies and private companies, with total funding exceeding $23 million. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a board member of the International Environmental Modelling & Software Society.
