Computational Scientist

Austin Harris is a computational astrophysicist in the Science Engagement Section and the Advanced Computing for Nuclear, Particles, and Astrophysics Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His work bridges nuclear astrophysics, scientific software development, and leadership-class computing. He develops and applies large-scale simulation capabilities for core-collapse supernovae and related astrophysical phenomena, with particular interests in neutrino transport, nuclear microphysics, nucleosynthesis, and multidimensional stellar explosions.

His broader work focuses on advancing scientific applications for high-performance computing through software development, performance analysis, numerical methods, and collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams. He also supports the effective use and evolution of leadership computing systems by helping connect the needs of scientific applications with developments in programming environments, mathematical libraries, and computing technologies.

He received his Ph.D. in Physics, with an Interdisciplinary Graduate Minor in Computational Science, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2015.
