Associate Laboratory Director

Associate Laboratory Director Dr. Alan Icenhour, who has been with ORNL since 1990, leads the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED). The directorate is focused on delivering high-impact isotopes that offer a range of applications for industry, science, and medicine, making ORNL a world leader in isotope research, development, and production. ISED also serves as the nation’s steward of enrichment technology. In this role, Dr. Icenhour leads two research divisions (Radioisotope Science and Technology, and Enrichment Science and Engineering) and one operating division (Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities).

Dr. Icenhour’s nuclear experience includes research and development on a range of fuel cycle topics including enrichment, radiochemical processing, stable and radioactive isotope production, nuclear fuels, radiation effects on materials, radioactive waste management, and nuclear security. He has previously served ORNL as the associate laboratory director for Nuclear Science and Engineering and the director for three divisions. He also completed a special assignment in Washington, D.C., as a Senior Technical Advisor to the Proliferation Detection Program within the Office of Nonproliferation Research and Development of the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Before joining ORNL, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and continued as an active reservist, retiring in 2010 at the rank of Captain (O-6). Dr. Icenhour is an adjunct professor of nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee, a fellow of the American Nuclear Society, and a member of the Institute for Nuclear Materials Management.
